How Long Does an Exterior Painting Project Take?

Most exterior painting projects take 2 to 10 working days, depending on your home’s size, the condition of the surfaces, and—this is Minnesota—the weather.

What affects the timeline?
A few key things determine how long your project will take:
Whether your home is 1-story or 2-story (or has tricky peaks)
Uneven landscaping—some homes require scaffolding if ladders can’t be safely placed
Condition of siding and trim—more prep, more time
The weather—we’ve had years (like May 2024) when rain delayed many projects
Crew size
Typical timelines
Here’s what we usually see:
Small homes (1,500–2,000 sq ft): 2–3 days (not counting pressure washing)
Medium Eden Prairie homes: 3–6 days
Larger homes: 7–10 days
Very large (4,500+ sq ft): 15–20 days with a 4-person crew

That's us going up a 60' ladder to set up a roof anchor.
How we work
Pressure washing: For bigger projects, we typically wash a day before (or even same day). Smaller jobs, we might wash 2–3 days in advance.
All in one go: We don’t split prep and painting phases. Most homeowners prefer to get everything done as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Weather is the only factor that might cause a pause.
Crew size: Our average exterior crew is 3–5 people. Smaller jobs might have 2–3, larger jobs 4–5.
Long days: We only have about 4–6 good months to paint, so we maximize daylight. If the homeowner agrees, we’ll start at 8 a.m. and may work until 7:30 or 8 p.m. We always check with the homeowner to avoid disturbing neighbors.
Team consistency: We don’t split large jobs between crews. Instead, our team works together—often moving clockwise around the home or following the shade on hot days.
Common delays (besides rain): The biggest delay is when homeowners haven’t finalized paint colors. We can’t start until those are locked in.
Our guarantee: We never take a deposit until we start. Many companies collect a deposit and leave homeowners waiting. We don’t do that. The day we begin prep is the day we take any deposit, not before.
